Stadium Lighting

Friday nights, summer ball and rodeo season all depend on lights that come on every time. Evergreen Electrical & Mechanical is a licensed electrical contractor based in Lamar. We design, install and maintain sports lighting for school districts, colleges, towns, parks departments and county fairgrounds across Southeast Colorado, including the fields at Lamar, McClave and Wiley high schools. We handle the whole job, from the service entrance and underground feeders to the fixtures, aiming and controls.

Facilities we light

  • High school and college football and soccer stadiums
  • Baseball and softball fields
  • Rodeo arenas, fairgrounds and livestock show areas
  • Track facilities and practice fields
  • Tennis and pickleball courts
  • Town parks and recreation complexes
  • Stadium parking lots and concourses

Sports lighting services

  • New LED sports lighting systems. Complete systems for new fields or full rebuilds, coordinated with poles and foundations.
  • Metal halide to LED retrofits. New LED fixtures on existing poles when the poles and crossarms are structurally sound.
  • Photometric layouts. Lighting plans that show foot-candle levels and uniformity across the playing surface before you commit.
  • Electrical service and distribution. New services, transformer coordination with the utility, panels, contactors and underground feeders.
  • Lighting controls. Scheduling, zone switching, dimming for practice levels and remote on/off.
  • Repair and maintenance. Troubleshooting outages, replacing failed fixtures, ballasts and drivers, re-aiming, and inspecting poles and wiring.

We own our bucket trucks and have access to specialized equipment for tall poles and heavy fixtures. Every project is done by our own crews, not subcontracted.

Why districts and towns are switching to LED

  • Lower energy costs. Published school retrofits have cut field lighting energy use by 50–60% compared with metal halide.
  • Far less maintenance. LED fixtures are rated for 50,000–100,000 hours, versus roughly 10,000–20,000 for metal halide lamps. That means far fewer lift rentals and burned-out lamps.
  • Instant on. No 15-minute warm-up, and no long wait to restrike after a power blip or weather delay.
  • Better light on the field. More even light, less glare for players and spectators, and sharper video for game film and live streams.
  • Less spill. Modern optics put the light on the field instead of in the neighbors' windows or the night sky.
  • Parts availability. Metal halide lamps and ballasts are becoming harder to find as manufacturers move to LED.

Light levels for each level of play

We design to the target light level for your facility and level of play. As a general guide, IES recommendations for high school football run about 30–50 foot-candles, and college play runs higher. Practice and recreational fields can use lower levels. Uniformity matters as much as brightness. Even light across the field means no dark spots where a ball or player disappears.

How a stadium lighting project works

  • Site assessment. We inspect the existing poles, fixtures, electrical service and controls, and measure current light levels.
  • Design and budget. We provide a photometric layout, scope and cost, with options such as retrofit versus new poles.
  • Bid and board support. We provide the specs and pricing your board, bid process or grant application needs.
  • Installation. We schedule work around your sports calendar and keep the site safe and secure.
  • Aiming and commissioning. We aim every fixture, verify light levels, and set up and test the controls.
  • Ongoing service. We offer maintenance agreements and priority response so the lights are ready for every game.

Frequently Asked Questions

Cost depends on the field size, level of play, whether existing poles can be reused, and the electrical work needed. A retrofit on sound existing poles usually costs much less than a new system with new poles. We provide a photometric design and a detailed quote after a site assessment.

Often, yes. We inspect the poles, crossarms and wiring first. If they're structurally sound and can carry the new fixtures, a retrofit is usually the most cost-effective path.

IES guidance for high school football is generally about 30 to 50 foot-candles, with good uniformity across the field. We design to the level that fits your facility and how it's used.

Published school retrofits have cut field lighting energy use by 50 to 60 percent compared with metal halide. LED also cuts maintenance, since fixtures last many times longer than metal halide lamps.

Yes. We provide photometric layouts, fixture specs, energy estimates and itemized pricing for board approvals, public bids and grant applications.
